Modern-day Alamo, Texas, is named after the famed Alamo Mission in San Antonio which was the site of the notorious Battle of the Alamo. The Alamo Mission was one of many Spanish missions set up in East Texas meant to serve the new Spanish settlements taking root in the area during the early part of the 1700s. Long before the Spanish arrived, Native Americans had inhabited these lands for approximately 11,000 years. Archaeological findings indicate that these civilizations were hunters and gatherers who did not have any established agricultural practices. The city of Alamo is located in Hidalgo County, which was formed in 1852 and named after Miguel Hidalgo y Costilla, noted for his legendary speech, the “Grito de Dolores” (or the “Cry of Dolores”). Today, Alamo is called “The Refuge to the Valley” and is nestled in the Rio Grande Valley in an area nicknamed the “Land of Two Summers.” The land surrounding Alamo is well irrigated and has an abundance of vegetable farms and citrus groves. Furthermore, due to its pleasant weather year-round, Alamo has transformed into a bustling resort and retirement town with many resort-style amenities.

This 20-acre nature center offers residents and tourists nearly one mile of walking trails that take you through a native thorn scrub habitat that includes picnic areas. If you’re interested in history, Alamo is home to Alamo Museum where you can learn the history behind the city of Alamo and about Texas history in general.
