Palmhurst is a city located in the southern portion of Hidalgo County, Texas. Much like its neighbors, McAllen, Mission, West Sharyland, and Alton, the town of Palmhurst experienced a lot of its growth when the St. Louis, Brownsville, and Mexico Railway finished the Hidalgo and San Miguel Extension (now Sam Fordyce Branch). In 1904, John McAllen and his son James made a deal with the railroad in which the McAllen family would donate land to the railroad with the promise it would run a route through their future town. In the 1920s, a few industries were established in the Palmhurst area such as wineries, canning factories, woodworking plants, tortilla plants, as well as oil exploration. In the 1940s, the McAllen–Hidalgo–Reynosa International Bridge was erected, attracting a flood of tourist to the area who were looking to escape the cold of winter. As the area’s popularity grew, it was decided to incorporate Palmhurst in 1966.
