Pharr is a city located in Hidalgo County, Texas, and is connected to the Mexican city of Reynosa by a bridge that runs across the Rio Grande. Pharr is also part of the McAllen-Edinburg-Mission and Reynosa-McAllen metro areas. Pharr sits on the Missouri Pacific railroad line and U.S. Highway 83 and is east of McAllen. In 1767, the Spanish government gave Juan José Hinojosa. Over the years, Hinojosa, his family, and his heirs sold portions of the land grant to various people and groups, including John Connally Kelley and Henry N. Pharr, a sugarcane grower from Louisiana, who co-owned 16,000 acres. Shortly after purchasing the land, Pharr started the Louisiana & Rio Grande Canal Company, which included an irrigation system for a new sugar plantation. Then Kelley formed the Pharr Townsite Company and had the land platted for a townsite. Of course, Kelley only saw it fitting to name the town after his good friend and business partner, Henry Pharr.
