In 1908, five men, Dennis B. Chapin, Plutarco de la Viña, John Cloner, Argyle McAllen, and William Briggs, founded a community initially named “Chapin,” which was the last name of one its founders. Chapin’s town square used to be located at the current intersection of U.S. Highway 281 and State Highway 107. The County Courthouse had been located in the city of Hidalgo, but the city was always in danger of flooding since it sat so close to the Rio Grande.
