In 1908, five men, Dennis B. Chapin, Plutarco de la Viña, John Cloner, Argyle McAllen, and William Briggs, founded a community initially named “Chapin,” which was the last name of one its founders. Chapin’s town square used to be located at the current intersection of U.S. Highway 281 and State Highway 107. The County Courthouse had been located in the city of Hidalgo, but the city was always in danger of flooding since it sat so close to the Rio Grande. Hidalgo County chose to move the courthouse to Chapin since it was closest to the geographical center of the county. Dennis Chapin ended up getting involved in the fatal shooting of Oscar J. Rountree in San Antonio at a place called Dan Breen Saloon, so the name was changed to “Edinburg” after the village of Edinburgh, Scotland, where the prominent businessman John Young was born. Edinburg was officially named in 1911 and incorporated in 1919.
Edinburg is only two hours and 20 minutes away from Corpus Christi and only three hours and 30 minutes away from San Antonio, both via US-281 North. Other than that, Edinburg is near many natural green spaces such as Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge located at 3325 Green Jay in Alamo. This 2,088-acre National Wildlife Refuge is situated along the banks of the Rio Grande river. Since 1943, the wild refuge has been a refuge for protected migratory birds due to its unique location where different climates and habitats meet: the Chihuahuan Desert, subtropical wetlands, Great Plains, and Gulf Coast. Some of the notable wildlife seen in the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge are the Texas ocelot and Gulf Coast jaguarundi, both of which are endangered species. In addition to that, you have the Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park which is located in Mission. This 764-square foot State Park features a cafe, Texas State Parks Store, various exhibits, hiking trails, cycling trials, places dedicated for camping and picnicking, as well as birdwatching and butterfly observation. Furthermore, the La Plaza Mall serves the area by providing residents and tourists name brand shops such as Abercrombie, A’Gaci, Armani Exchange, and Best Buy.
