In 1790, Spain gave Juan José and Ynojosa de Ballí the Llano Grande land grant, which would become the site of present-day Weslaco in Hidalgo County, Texas. Upon the passing of Ynojosa, the land grant was given to his children. His two daughters, Manuela and Maria, received the portion of land from the grant that is the exact site of Weslaco. The Balli family, on the other hand, continued to ranch and maintained their ownership until 1852. In 1904, the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway extended its railway line, the Hidalgo and San Miguel extension, to the area of the site. This extension prompted the American Rio Grande Land and Irrigation Company to purchase a significant portion of the Llano Grande, platting the West Tract in 1913. In 1916, the United States began stationing troops along up and down the Rio Grande River in an attempt to curb raids. The military established a camp at the railroad station located in Llano Grande, between modern-day Mercedes and Weslaco. On December 14, 1917, the American Rio Grande Land and Irrigation Company sold 30,000 acres to the W. E. Stewart Land Company. The company established a town and named it “Weslaco,” which is a derivative of the company’s name.
For shopping and dining needs, residents of Weslaco have the La Plaza Mall that has many name brand retail stores including Abercrombie, A’Gaci, Armani Exchange, and Best Buy. This mall also features Charleys Philly Steaks, Marble Slab Creamery, and the Rocky Mountain Chocolate Factory. In addition to that, Weslaco has a number of natural green spaces, such as the McAllen Botanical Gardens located at 1000 S. Ware Road, also in McAllen. This 20-acre nature center offers residents and tourists nearly one mile of walking trails that take you through a native thorn scrub habitat that includes picnic areas. Then you have the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge located at 3325 Green Jay in Alamo. This 2,088-acre National Wildlife Refuge is situated along the banks of the Rio Grande river. Since 1943, the wild refuge has been a refuge for protected migratory birds due to its unique location where different climates and habitats meet: the Chihuahuan Desert, subtropical wetlands, Great Plains, and Gulf Coast. Some of the notable wildlife seen in the Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge is the Texas ocelot and Gulf Coast jaguarundi, both of which are endangered species. If you’re looking for a place to take the kids, you have attractions such as Altitude Trampoline Park in McAllen. It includes such amenities as the Foam Pit, Trampoline Basketball, wall-to-wall trampolines at the Main Court, and much more.
