Located on the Rio Grande, the city of Hidalgo, Texas, and is at the junction of State Highway 336 and U.S. Highway 281 in the southern region of Hidalgo County. Before Spanish settlers arrived in the area, Native American groups such as the Coahuiltecan and Karankawa had inhabited the region for countless generations, and were hunters and gatherers who had no particular agricultural system in place, nor did they keep grazing animals of any kind. In 1749, Spanish settlers from a colony established by José de Escandón formed a community named La Habitación (also known as Rancho San Luis and San Luisito) on the land that later becomes present-day Hidalgo. Escandón was responsible for founding over 20 towns and numerous missions along the Rio Grande, and thus was called by many as the "father of the lower Rio Grande Valley.” After Texas was annexed to the United States in 1845, many American pioneers migrated to the region, with a native Scotsman by the name of John Young moving to La Habitación and renaming it Edinburgh, Scotland, which was his hometown. When the postal service built a post office in Edinburgh, the name was changed to Hidalgo. Hidalgo was officially incorporated in 1931.
