The Spanish government was the first entity to own Padre Island until 1820 when the Mexican Revolution took place. After the revolution, Mexico took ownership of Padre Island from 1821 until 1836, when the Republic of Texas was formed and took over ownership. The Republic of Texas claimed a stretch of land between the Nueces River and the River Grande River. Following the Mexican-American War that took place between 1845 and 1848, the Texas territory came under the control of the United States government, along with Corpus Christi. During these various ownerships, the island was known by different names such as La Isla Blanca (White Island), Isla de los Malaguitas (Island of the Malachites), with Padre Island being the most recent. The first permanent European settlement occurred on the southern tip of Corpus Christi and was established by Padre Nicolas Balli, a Spanish priest, after whom it’s named after. Before the arrival of the Spanish, the only people to visit the island were the Native American tribes, a few Spanish troops, and survivors of three shipwrecks that happened off its shores in the 16th century.
